bax

Symbol: bax
Name: Bcl2-associated X protein
Entrez gene ID: 12028
Ensembl gene ID: ENSMUSG00000003873
Species: Mouse (Taxid: 10090)

Functional description:
Accelerates programmed cell death by binding to, and antagonizing the apoptosis repressor BCL2 or its adenovirus homolog E1B 19k protein. Under stress conditions, undergoes a conformation change that causes translocation to the mitochondrion membrane, leading to the release of cytochrome c that then triggers apoptosis. Promotes activation of CASP3, and thereby apoptosis. BAX deficiency leads to lymphoid hyperplasia and male sterility, because of the cessation of sperm production. [UniProt]

Observation:

Inactivation of proapoptotic Bax extends fertile potential and minimized age-related health problems, including bone and muscle loss, excess fat deposition, alopecia, cataracts, deafness, increased anxiety, and selective attention deficit. Bax deficiency does not lead to an increase in tumor incidence. Despite the apparently increased quality of life of aging females lacing Bax, there is no significant differences in overall lifespan [17360389].
