Ensembl gene ID: FBgn0033799
Species: Fly (Taxid: 7227)

Functional description:
Glial Lazarillo; Glial Lazarillo [Source:FlyBase gene name;Acc:FBgn0033799] [Ensembl]; The gene Glial Lazarillo is referred to in FlyBase by the symbol Dmel\GLaz (CG4604, FBgn0033799). It is a protein_coding_gene from Drosophila melanogaster. It is reported to have molecular function: binding. There is experimental evidence that it is involved in the biological process: determination of adult lifespan; cellular response to oxidative stress; cellular response to starvation. 9 alleles are reported. The phenotypes of these alleles are annotated with: adult fat body; adult nervous system; adult brain. It has 6 annotated transcripts and 6 annotated polypeptides. Protein features are: Calycin; Calycin-like; Lipocalin, ApoD type; Lipocalin/cytosolic fatty-acid binding protein domain. Summary of modENCODE Temporal Expression Profile: Temporal profile ranges from a peak of moderately high expression to a trough of very low expression. Peak expression observed within 00-06 and 12-24 hour embryonic stages, at stages throughout the pupal period, in adult male stages. [FlyBase]

Observation:

Overexpression of GLaz results in increased resistance to hyperoxia (100% O2) and a 29% extension of mean lifespan under normoxia. Lifespan was also extended 30-60% under starvation [16581512]. Loss-of-function mutation of GLaz which decreases its expression of GLaz results in shorter lifespan and decreased resistance to oxidative stress in males [16581513].
