The rrf-1 and ego-1 and rrf-1 genes form a tandem array 0.9 kb apart, while rrf-2 and rrf-3 have distinct loci; however, both rrf-1 and ego-1 mRNAs are transspliced to SL1, and thus arise from separate genes not sharing an operon.
