Today most of the people focus primarily on narrow issues of their interest/working fields but do not think globally. In the same time there is the aggregation effect.
If we make a small change in a tree and scale it to the rest of the forest, this small tiny change on small scale may change the whole forest entirely on large one.
Aggregation issues are well known in sociology and economics and there are some working models that are based on it. For instance there is Schelling's segregation model that is applicable to population segregation. For example, if when buying a house you want at least 5% of your neighbors to be same type (occupation, wealth, etc.) as you and everybody is doing the same it may lead to 40-50% and more segregation (not 5%).
