The genome of the western painted turtle, Chrysemys picta bellii placed into a comparative evolutionary context with focus on many genomic features like longevity revealed that orthologs of three (POT1, TERF2IP, TEP1) of the five genes which make up the shelterin complex (implicated in the longevity of naked-mole rat) were missing.

This may indicate that the longevity mechanism in the naked mole rat is not the same as the Western Painted Turtle.

Further among the orthologs Aging-associated genes the western painted turtle also lacks ATP5O and PLCG2 which may be important in the extraordinary longevity of turtles [23537068].
