The basic layer, the foundation of the Semantic Web is of course the World Wide Web.

So we relay on the the technology that is in the World Wide Web. First of all we have to identify things that we are talking about. Therefore an already existing identification mechanisms that the Web provides is usapplied. This is the URI - the Uniform Resource Identifier.

URI can identify all objects, like persons, things, etc.
