Change: Metabolic Signature Predicts Biological Age

Metabolic profiling of 117 wild-type mice of different genetic backgrounds revealed a robust metabolomic signature and metabolomic score that predicts the age of mice. telomerase-deficient mice have a short lifespan and their metabolomic score predicts older ages as they are. In contrast, mice that over-express telomerase and live longer have a metabolic score that corresponds to younger ages. Telomerase reactivation late in life by TERT based gene therapy significantly reverted the metabolic profile of old mice to that of young mice [http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/acel.12025/abstract].

Within this signature there are basically changes mostly in lipid homeostasis and one-carbon metabolism. So the question arises which metabolites are most strongly associated with a biological young state and why are they?
